I want to share Steele’s birth story so that one day I can look back on it and remember every detail. He’s already 6 months old and that time has flown by. I want to document this so that I never forget it and maybe one day he and his wife can read this when they have their first child.
April 2018 we wanted to start a family, we were naïve to think that I would get pregnant right away. I couldn’t wait to take a pregnancy test in May because I was sure I was pregnant, I was sad to see the negative pregnancy test but didn’t dwell on it. This continued month after month and we became sadder and sadder with each negative test. Fast forward to January 2019 we decided if I wasn’t pregnant that month that we’d schedule some appointments and figure out what’s going on. On the morning of February 14th, I took a test because we were going to dinner that night and I wanted to be able to have a glass of wine and be 100% sure I wasn’t pregnant. I took the test and set it down and forgot about it. I got ready for work and before leaving I grabbed the test quickly (fully expecting it to be negative and be tossed in the trash just like the previous months) and saw the two lines equaling a positive. I couldn’t believe it, so I took three more tests just to be sure. I had to wait the entire day to tell Sean, but I’ll never forget that moment.
Fast forward to our first doctors’ appointment to confirm the pregnancy. They wouldn’t see me until I was 10 weeks along. That was the longest 5 weeks ever. We were extremely nervous about this appointment because I felt fine, no morning sickness nothing. I just kept thinking I hope I’m still
pregnant. Sure enough, the ultrasound confirmed the pregnancy, and we were beyond relieved. After 8 weeks we told our families and at 14 weeks we told the world.
The next 7 months went by fast and I felt great, besides getting uncomfortable towards the end. I loved being pregnant and couldn’t wait to be a mom. My due date was October 20 and that day came and went to my doctor’s surprise – she was sure I would go into labor that weekend. My doctor didn’t want me going far past my due date because of where the umbilical cord was attached to the placenta (I forget the technical term). We decided October 23 was a good day to be induced.
October 23: we got to the hospital at 7AM and they got me hooked up to an IV and then broke my water. I was already having contractions at that point (very mild so I didn’t even know). Around 10AM they started me on Pitocin and things got painful. Contractions were about 30 seconds apart at this
point (I’ll never wait that long for an epidural again!). After a few hours, I got an epidural and was feeling so much better, sleeping, joking, and enjoying labor. Two hours later I could feel my legs again and could start to feel contractions and immediately thought what is going on why isn’t the epidural working. Long story short they had to remove the first epidural and put a new one in. Not long after that, I pushed twice and Steele was born – at 3:21PM 7 lbs. 10 oz. 21 inches long.
Steele Umit Nasifoglu
The story behind his name. When Sean and I were dating we would talk about what to name our children one day, I always said if we have a boy I want his name to be Steele (my maiden name). Not only because my dad has no boys, so the name won’t carry on, but for me. I’ve had the name Steele my entire life until getting married and changing my name, so his full name would honor me and my family as well as Sean’s. Eventually, Sean agreed on the name (even though we wouldn’t need it for 6 more years). We chose the middle name Umit to honor Sean’s dad – we told our families that his middle name would be Michael (because that is Sean, Umit, and my dad’s middle names) but all along we knew his middle name would be Umit. It was such a special moment to be able to tell the family Steele’s full name.
We love you so much Sunny! xx
